INTRODUCTION

Thurso Town Hall and the adjacent Carnegie Library has been refurbished and adapted to function as one unique attraction designed to cater for all that meets the needs of both the local community and visitors to the county.  Areas are set aside for a tourist information centre, shop, reception gallery and cafe, as well as spaces for temporary exhibitions and an open learning centre.  Some of these areas will also be available for community use.

The rest of the building houses a major museum, with a permanent exhibition whose main elements are described in the 'Explore Inside' section of this website.  Architectural drawings and floor plans will also help you to imagine what we've created but, as anyone will tell you, you really will have to visit for yourself to truly appreciate this new and exciting facility.

Through telling the fascinating story of Thurso town and the county of Caithness, the museum aims to explore humanity's impact on the natural world.  We show how people have used its resources to provide food, shelter and energy over the generations.  We then examine what has been learned about the long term effects some of these activities have had on that environment and what we can do - and are doing - to ensure long term sustainability.

As a whole, our permanent exhibition celebrates nature's ability to heal itself and helps visitors to learn more about how to use the environment in a sustainable way.

We look forward to seeing you!
